11+ Exam Day: Tips for Success

The content side is covered by months of preparation. This is about the practical, day-of details that help your child actually show what they know.

The night before

โœ“ Lay out everything needed the night before โ€” admission slip or ID if required, pencils, a water bottle โ€” so the morning isn't a scramble.
โœ“ Confirm the exact venue, start time and what time you need to arrive โ€” some test centres are stricter about late arrival than others.
โœ“ Stop formal practice the evening before. A short, light review at most โ€” cramming the night before adds stress without adding much knowledge.
โœ“ Aim for a normal bedtime and a proper night's sleep โ€” a well-rested child consistently outperforms a tired one, regardless of how much extra revision was squeezed in.
โœ“ Keep the evening calm and ordinary โ€” a relaxed dinner and an early night beats a tense, exam-focused evening.

On the morning

During the test: time-management tips

Remind your child before they go in: everyone finds some questions hard โ€” that's normal and expected, not a sign that something's gone wrong.

Afterwards โ€” however it goes

However your child feels coming out, the most useful thing in the moment is reassurance that it's over and that you're proud of the effort, not a debrief of which questions they think they got wrong. Save any detailed conversation for later, and keep it light even then.

Results and offers can take weeks to come through, depending on your local authority and the schools applied to. It's worth preparing your child gently for either outcome in advance โ€” a backup comprehensive school they're also comfortable with removes a lot of the pressure the 11+ itself can otherwise carry.

Whatever the result: a child who has built strong reading, maths and reasoning skills through this process carries those skills into secondary school regardless of which school they attend. The preparation is rarely wasted, even when a specific outcome doesn't go to plan.
